The first annual Damascus Dog Day took place on April 12, 2008, in Damascus, Virginia. This is an all-volunteer event to provide assistance to the Washington County Animal Shelter. Donated materials are gathered for the shelter, and any cash donated is used to purchase supplies such as bleach, dog food, cleaning materials, and other items needed to run the shelter.
Participating organizations provide low-cost rabies shots and a microchip clinic, as well as dog health consultations by a veterinarian.
A strong emphasis is placed on adoption, with ten families gaining new pets in our first event. Fees are kept to a minimum, and background checks are speedy.
